About us

WSL, a Wallon incubator for engineering sciences.

WSL Suports Walloon Projets in Engineering Sciences

Between the brilliant idea that pops into the mind of the entrepreneur and its implementation in a complex market, a specific structure is often missing. This is where WSL comes.

Opening of WeLL

Fifteen years ago, the Walloon Government set up WSL, Europe’s first technology incubator. It was designed to launch, in the space sector, spin-offs originating in all the universities in the French community of Wallonia and Brussels.

What a long way we have come since then! The very mission of WSL quickly went beyond its space sector boundaries to support projects in engineering sciences.

This evolution is carried out in close collaboration with WSL’s natural partners: universities, other institutions of higher education, the Walloon Export and Foreign Investment Agency (AWEX), and Competitiveness Clusters. This commitment to collaborate, deeply ingrained in our vision, is clearly illustrated with our many other partners in Wallonia!

And after 2015? New projects, new businesses,
and much more innovation and ambition for Wallonia.

Geographic Deployment

A PRESENCE THROUGHOUT WALLONIA AND AN INTERNATIONAL DEPLOYMENT

Even if the Liège Science Park, on the Sart-Tilman Hill, close to the University of Liège, is the birthplace of WSL, its range of action has always been Wallonia as a whole… Over the years, and with WSL’s successes, it has become essential to be physically present throughout Wallonia.

These days, WSL is present in all Walloon provinces, resulting in a closer proximity with the incubated businesses, the universities and the other institutions of higher education.

In the light of the spheres of activity of the businesses supervised by WSL, it is only natural that its Walloon deployment would be coupled with an international expansion, to the benefit of its start-ups.

WSL built privileged relationships with the Research Valley Partnership of the Texas A&M University (Houston, Texas) or with Cal Poly, the California Polytechnic State University. Furthermore, WSL is certified with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Centre for Nuclear Research in Switzerland (CERN) labels and is considered the Belgian key player.

In 2005, WSL became the first incubator certified with the NBIA label outside the U.S. Behind this honorary title lies an important work of internationalisation.
